This spring, one of our fifth-grade students was looking for a way to earn her Bronze level badge for Girl Scouts by completing a group project that identified a concern or challenge and took action through a project to support this problem or provide a solution for the audience. She brought this to her fifth-grade girls' lunch group, who helped brainstorm. Their vision: create a comfortable space for students who are looking for someone to play with, a place where classmates could encourage each other and share kindness. Thus, the Buddy Bench was born.
Sourcing materials from Marburn faculty and staff, the team created a stone bench to sit in a quiet area of the playground. And, after numerous weather delays, the group finally had a chance to put the finishing touches on it - a coat of bright paint and inspirational messages.
We can think of few things that better capture the spirit of Marburn than this student-led, collaborative initiative meant to bring happiness and acceptance to those who need it most. Great job!

The first-ever Arts-A-Palooza was a huge success! This event was a showcase of students' creative talent across several mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, digital design, video and animation, singing, playing instruments, and dramatic performances. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate these students' accomplishments! And special thanks to our Artist-In-Residence, Melissa Frueh, who worked with students to create sculpture pieces, including a jointly created sculpture that will be on display at Marburn. The artist-in-residence program was made possible through a generous grant from the Ohio Arts Council.

Through the community's overwhelming generosity, SHINE 2025 raised $341,714 in support of students who learn differently, more than $40K over our goal. Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Junto this past Friday night to celebrate our students and our honorees, IGS Energy and the White Family, all those who donated through the Gift of Learning, and those who bid in the Live Auction. Thank you to all those at home bidding on Silent Auction items, buying raffle tickets, and making donations. And, thank you to the volunteers, parents, corporate sponsors, and community members who made the night possible.

Our Aftercare students had a visitor earlier this month...a service dog in training named Paris from Canine Companions. Students learned who service dogs assist, what kind of help they can provide, and the training it requires for a canine to graduate as "top dog" in their class. Oh, and they got to shake Paris' paw- adorable!

For students, sometimes it can feel like spring moves at a glacial pace...so what better time to study glaciers! Middle Division students recently learned how these large ice masses can impact the shape of the land through a hands-on demonstration.

Freshmen in 2 and 3D Design class recently completed a fun new project. The students used Onshape, a computer-aided design software, to plan and design name tags. Once rendered, the tags were printed on a 3D printer.
Special thank you to AT&T for providing our entire freshman class with Apple laptops through their Connected Learning program, ensuring we are able to provide our 1:1 technology program to all students.

Marburn's Summer School program is in full swing! Students are discovering strengths, building confidence, and preparing for the coming school year in a variety of ways. Some of the creative lessons include:
• A puppet show where students practiced writing skills by creating character descriptions and writing their own scripts,
• origami to introduce basic geometry,
• and, a math problem scavenger hunt!

Marburn kicked off Teacher Appreciation Week a bit early with the annual Recognition Dinner last week. Faculty, staff, and board members were honored by colleagues for their years of dedication to the Marburn Academy community. In all, a total of 121 years of service by faculty and staff members were celebrated, including 20 years for Ruth Rubin, College Guidance Counselor, and 25 years for Lisa Neuhoff, Orton Gillingham Training Fellow. Join us as we laud their continued devotion to serving students who learn differently.

BREAKING NEWS! To wrap up their studies on Ancient India, 6th graders partnered up and were each assigned a different topic to discuss. They created a news broadcast on topics like language, socioeconomic systems, and religion. The activity was not only a fun way to showcase what they have learned but also a chance to practice their public speaking and listening skills.

Are hearts "red" or "read"? Valentine's Day gave the Lower Division a fun and engaging reason to practice non-phonetic words or words that are spelled differently than their phonetic pronunciation, through a series of activities called Heart Words. Students practiced these tricky words multiple times through varied activities that activated multiple senses; a hallmark of Marburn's daily Orton-Gillingham teaching instruction. These words can be tough for any new reader, so following specific methods students use in class consistently, across subject areas especially benefits those who learn differently.

A "sweet" way to learn about plate tectonics. Middle Division students used graham crackers and icing to investigate how divergent, convergent, and transform plates move and impact the environment around them.

Out of an abundance of caution and considering the anticipated freezing rain, Marburn Academy has made the difficult decision to close today, Tuesday, January 23rd. All events are canceled.
