At Marburn Academy, it is our mission to celebrate students who learn differently, empowering them to awaken their potential, to achieve success in school and life, and to drive positive change in our communities. Affecting positive change in our communities is something we at Marburn strive to do from a school level as well. Because of that, we feel that we should share our knowledge about teaching students who learn differently with the educational community by offering the following opportunities for educational professionals.
Orton-Gillingham Course and Practicum
2023 Summer Training Dates: June 8th - July 21st
Cost: $2,000.00 with a $250.00 non-refundable materials fee (doubles as the deposit )
We believe it is critical to prepare an educator to teach the structure of the English language, examine the process of reading acquisition, and explain how to overcome the barriers to reading development caused by learning differences, such as dyslexia.
Marburn Academy is accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) and is proud to provide Orton-Gillingham training that begins the journey of learning how to help students with learning differences. Lisa Neuhoff, an OGA-accredited Fellow, teaches the Associate Level course and supervises the practicum of all participants. Ms. Neuhoff has been practicing the Orton-Gillingham approach since 2000, holds a master’s degree in reading science, and has trained and supervised more than 250 teachers and tutors.
Marburn Academy supports the rigorous standards associated with OGA training. This training, recognized by the International Dyslexia Association, includes:
60 hours of coursework by an accredited Fellow;
Rationale for selecting the Orton-Gillingham approach for individuals with dyslexia;
Extensive information on reading acquisition development in all learners, the neurological basis of reading, and the essential components of effective reading instruction;
In-depth understanding of the Orton-Gillingham approach;
Assessment;
Lesson planning;
Adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham approach for classroom instruction.
The 60-hour training combined with 40-60 hours of supervised tutorial practicum serves as a foundation of understanding for educators. This foundational training allows a participant to continue serving students under the supervision of an OGA Fellow. Due to our dedication to ensuring students are served by appropriately trained Orton-Gillingham tutors, participants will be required to sign an agreement to follow the OGA guidelines for continued tutoring.
Why OGA training?
It interweaves lectures with practical application of concepts and skills.
Teachers meet daily with students to apply new OG skills and knowledge in a one-to-one setting.
Individualized support from an OGA Fellow to apply the knowledge base learned during coursework.
OGA was established by Founding Fellows who were trained by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham.

Testimonials about the OGA Course
“The mindset, multi-sensory activities, and language background I was outfitted with allowed me to return to my classroom and better engage my students. I became more intentional with my introduction of vocabulary and content, and I saw dramatic results. Since that time, I’ve had the privilege to view the program’s impact from the vantage points of a classroom teacher, Summer Program Director, and Division Head. I continue to see the benefits the approach has for both educators and students.”
“Marburn offers the best educator training to help students with learning differences. I have taken four separate Orton-Gillingham approach courses, and Marburn is the most valuable course I found. None of the other courses I took offered the practical experience of lesson planning and tutoring with guidance. For teachers and parents wanting in-depth information about teaching reading with the Orton-Gillingham approach, Marburn Academy is the place to go!”
