Employment Opportunities
Invest in Your Career at Marburn Academy
Professional Development
Each Marburn Academy teacher works with a Faculty Leader to develop a plan for professional development to keep on top of current research and innovative teaching methods. Faculty Leaders serve as resources and mentors for this process and meet regularly with all teachers. Each faculty member receives a professional development budget to cover the cost of association memberships, professional publications, workshops and conferences. Each year, teachers are given 3 paid professional development days to further reinforce this process.
In addition, Marburn Academy has an early release day each week. This allows teachers and administrators uninterrupted time to develop new curriculum, receive training, hear about current research, and to collaborate with colleagues in designing opportunities for our students to discover their talents, cultivate strengths, and pursue interests.
Orton-Gillingham Training
Marburn Academy is an Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators accredited school, and faculty members receive training in this carefully sequenced way of teaching all the elements of the sound system of the English language in a multisensory manner. The cost of this training for each teacher is paid for by the school rather than the faculty member. In addition, graduate credits are available upon completion of training. Those who receive Orton-Gillingham certification through AOGPE are eligible to earn additional monies by tutoring through the after school tutoring program.
Math Training
Teachers attend a week long school-funded mathematics seminar. We use a multisensory, experiential system for teaching numerical concepts, math skills, and quantitative reasoning that was designed to help students who struggle or fail with traditional abstract, symbolic, algorithm-based presentations.
Small Class Size
We have found that a small class size promotes a better learning environment for our children. Classroom settings are based on a model of 16 students and 2 full-time Lead Teachers.
Tuition Reimbursement
Faculty members are encouraged to take educational courses or pursue an advanced degree through the Graduate Tuition Reimbursement Program.
Stipends
In addition to the base salary, staff members are paid a stipend of up to $15 per hour for leading extracurricular activities (i.e. coaching athletic teams and supervising after school clubs.) An annual stipend may also be earned for execution of the duties of a Curriculum Project Leader.
Intern Position
Beginning teachers and those who are changing careers often take advantage of our one year Intern position. This is a full-time internship offered at 2/3 the starting teacher salary which includes benefits, paid training in the Orton-Gillingham approach and Marburn Mathematics techniques. Interns are active in the classroom but are exempt from some of the responsibilities of the Lead Teacher such as creating lesson plans and report cards.
Pathwise Mentoring for Entry-Year Teachers
Entry-year teachers are mentored by a staff member who has completed Ohio Department of Education Pathwise mentoring training in the four domains of knowledge and skills necessary for effective teaching.
