Diagnostic Testing
Reading Evaluations
State-of-the-art, diagnostic dyslexia evaluations are offered to children and adults through the Dyslexia Diagnostic Center at Marburn Academy. Based on the latest research, these differential evaluations provide a detailed look at all facets of reading and spelling, an estimate of underlying causes of any problems that are identified, complete IQ scores, and an "educational prescription" of interventions to considered for remediation of the problem, if that proves necessary. Diagnostic reading evaluations can be scheduled throughout the school year at a cost of $750.00.

Free Early Reading Screening Program
As part of its mission "to act as a resource to the community", Marburn Academy is offering FREE EARLY READING SCREENINGS for 5-7 year-old children whose parents want to know if their child is likely to encounter difficulty in learning to read.
The Free Early Reading Screening Program is built on the body of research which shows that at an early age children can be reliably screened for the skills that must be present before reading and spelling can successfully develop. Designed much like a "well-child" checkup at the pediatrician's office, the screening is a quick but thorough look at a child's phonemic awareness abilities, phonological processing, phonological memory, rapid naming skills, and family language history. Tests are scored and feedback is shared immediately with the parent.
What do we KNOW about early reading, writing, and /or spelling skills and achievement in later life?
-
"Phonological awareness is more highly correlated to early reading success than tests of general intelligence, reading readiness, and listening comprehension.” (Stanovich, 1994.)
-
“The lack of phonological awareness is the most powerful determinant of the likelihood of failure to learn to read.” (Adams, 1990; Moats and Foorman, 1997.)
-
“Screening tests of phonological awareness skills in grades K and 1 predict with 95% accuracy who will have difficulties learning to read.” (Lyon, 1997; California State Department of Education, 2000.)
-
“Phonological awareness is equally important in learning to spell as it is in learning to read.” (Ehri, 1992; Tremain, 1994; Clay, 1998)
Phonological Awareness
The term “phonological awareness” refers to a child’s awareness of and sensitivity to the sounds of his or her oral language. Memory for these sounds and the ability to put them together and take them apart to form new and different words are the foundations upon which fluent reading are built. Furthermore,
“...critical levels of phonological awareness can be developed through carefully planned instruction, and this development has a significant influence on children’s reading and spelling achievement...”
